The Eisteddfod

Our topic this half term is the Eisteddfod. We will be exploring the tradition of the Eisteddfod, the history behind it, different events, the Welsh Language as well as holding our own in class Eisteddfod.

A large part this learning will be focussed on expressive arts.

Phonics

Spelling is something we are placing a large emphasis on this year and as a school we are currently running daily phonics sessions. Pupils are really enjoying these sessions. Each pupil will be working on their own set of words based on their current level. Each day they will be practicing these in different ways such as bubble writing, writing in flour, upside down or back to front writing to name but a few. We then have a spelling test on a Friday so pupils can evaluate how they got on before moving on to new words.

The hope is that we will continue to see pupils developing their spelling skills through this method.

Wellbeing

As a school we are placing a large focus on pupil wellbeing. One way we are addressing this is through the use of the Zones of Regulation. Each morning we have a class check in where all pupils are asked how they are feeling (often in Welsh) and have the opportunity to share how they are feeling and explain why if they feel comfortable to. This has been a great success in the class and pupils seem to really enjoy the session. It is also a great way for us to explore emotional awareness and regulation as well have an idea of how each pupil is feeling that day. This way we can identify if a pupil requires extra support, someone to talk to and also allows us to share with pupils their excitement and happiness.
