Additional Learning Needs (ALN) at Blaendulais Primary School

At Blaendulais Primary School, we are committed to making a difference by ensuring that our curriculum and provision are accessible, inclusive and achievable for all learners. We work fully in line with the Additional Learning Needs (ALN) Code of Practice and follow guidance from Neath Port Talbot Council to meet the needs of every child effectively.

Children’s additional learning needs are identified promptly and accurately. Through close collaboration with pupils, parents/carers and, where appropriate, external agencies, we adopt a Person-Centred Approach to agree on the most appropriate next steps. This partnership approach enables us to put timely and effective support in place, making a difference as early as possible in each child’s learning journey. We offer a range of Universal and Additional Learning Provision to meet the diverse needs of our pupils.

All pupils with an additional need at Blaendulais Primary School have a One Page Profile, which helps us to understand their interests, strengths, talents and the best ways to support them. Pupils accessing Additional Learning Provision will have an Individual Development Plan (IDP) created in partnership with the child, parents/carers, school staff and external professionals where required. These plans are reviewed regularly to monitor progress, reflect changing needs and ensure that support remains meaningful and effective. In a very small number of cases, a pupil may require progression to a statutory assessment.

Children with additional learning needs are encouraged to be fully included within their class learning environment wherever possible. When necessary, pupils are supported through small-group work or targeted interventions to provide additional help. Teaching approaches include multi-sensory strategies and a wide range of practical resources, enabling pupils to access learning independently. Our learning environments are inclusive and communication friendly, promoting independence and ensuring all learners can fully access the curriculum, truly making a difference to their school experience.

Our ALNCo (Additional Learning Needs Co-ordinator) oversees all additional learning provision and interventions across the school. Effective communication and close partnership between teachers, teaching assistants, parents/carers and the ALNCo are central to creating, monitoring and reviewing individual targets that make a difference for every child.

The ALNCo works closely with a range of external professionals, including the Educational Psychology Service and Integrated Support Services, such as Visual Impairment, Hearing Impairment, Speech and Language Therapy and Well-Being Team services, ensuring well-coordinated and specialist support wherever needed.

We also recognise and support our More Able and Talented learners, identifying strengths in specific subject areas and providing opportunities that challenge and extend their learning. Enrichment activities and extra-curricular opportunities allow pupils to showcase their talents, whether through performances, or participation in sporting competitions across the county and beyond.

A range of targeted intervention programmes are delivered by our dedicated staff team. Programmes such as POPAT, RWI, Wellcomm and ELSA support the development of social skills, communication and emotional well-being. These sessions provide valuable opportunities for pupils to explore their feelings, manage change and build resilience, playing an essential role in making a difference to pupils’ self-esteem, confidence and overall well-being.
