Hi everybody, well this will be the last week of distance learning as we know it, as from next week, most of you will be returning to school to catch up and check in, this will give us the opportunity to discuss the ‘blended learning’ activities face to face before you complete them.  I’m really forward to seeing you again and seeing how much you have grown.  So here are this weeks activities:-

Language:

Write a persuasive text (for and against) about:  Would welcoming an evacuee into your home be a good thing or not.  Remember write a paragraphs of ‘for’ then a paragraph of ‘against’, then you decide which you believe with a reason for your answer.

Comprehension:  Remember only complete ONE of the comprehension, the one you feel most comfortable reading.

Activity 2:- Research the number of deaths in WW2 by country.  Put them in order depending on the most casualties.  Clue:  China had the most with 15 million people dying.

Activity 3: – Write a list of questions that you would ask Anne Frank.

Activity 4: – Research the 3 main types of air-raid shelter in WW2, the Anderson shelter, the Morrison shelter and the street communal shelter.  Compare the 3 of them.  Present your findings in the way you think is best.

 

 

Week beginning 15.06.2020

Hello everybody, I hope you are all keeping well and safe. It was lovely seeing some of you last week when you received your leavers hoodies.  I really hope you like them!

Well, as some of you may know, we will be returning to school in 2 weeks time, but things will be a little bit different.  Mr Phillips and I will be in touch with your parents to explain these changes to them and you.  Distance learning will continue but when you ‘Catch up and Check in’ at school, I will be able to explain the activities to you face to face (socially distancing of course!!). Well, here are your activities for this week, I hope you enjoy completing them.

Language:-  Imagine that you were an evacuee, write an informal letter home, telling your family how life has been since leaving them to stay safe in the countryside.  (there is a success criteria above to help you with the set out and what you need to include).

Topic – A Childs War

Activity 1 – Research the cities around Britain that were bombed the most during WW2.  Mark these of a map of Britain.  Do you see any pattern?

Activity 2 – Compare schools in WW2 to schools nowadays.  Are there any similarities/differences?

Activity 3 -Princess Elizabeth (the Queen) made her first public speech on October 13th 1940, she spoke to the children of the nation about the war.  Listen to her speech (you will need to google it), write and record your own speech, think about you would tell the children in your class if we were at war.

Activity 4 – Research and present (any media) 8 facts about Anne Frank.

Language: Write  a short play (up to 3 scenes) about 2 children being evacuated.  They could be siblings/cousins/friends/strangers.

Think about what they would be talking about, how they would be feeling?

Split your play into scenes. Remember to give your play a title, a setting and characters.

Remember in a play, we write the characters name, then a colon, then what is being said (no need for speech marks)  e.g

Matthew:  Did you enjoy the party last night?

Joanee:  Yes it was fun, did you?

Matthew:  It was alright, I wet home early as I was unwell.

Topic – A Child’s War
Activity 1 – Look up the words to the song ‘Pack Up your Troubles’ a wartime song written by Welsh brothers, George and Felix Powell.  Write/type them out, decorate it with a wartime theme.

Activity 2 – Read newspaper articles from the War and the SWANSEA BLITZ.  When did it start?  Why was Swansea targeted?  How many were killed?  etc. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO WRITE ANYTHING DOWN, JUST READ AND FAMILIARISE YOURSELF WITH THE SWANSEA BLITZ.

Activity 3 –  Create a picture/image of how you imagine the Swansea Blitz to have looked, the newspaper articles may be able to help you with these.

Activity 4 –  Research and list (brainstorm) the different jobs that men and women did during the war.

Activity 5 – Read the fact file on Winston Churchill.  There are 3 levels, read the level that you think suits you best.  Write 10 questions about the information that you have read to ask others.

Welcome back everybody, I hope you had a lovely week off and enjoyed your break.  The weather was fantastic, which of course helped us to stay at home I’m sure.  Well, it’s back to the distance learning for the time being and this half term, our new topic is called ‘A child’s War’ and it all about World War 2 and how children survived.  I hope you find it interesting and enjoy the activities that I have prepared for you.

Language: Write an autobiography. This is like a report about you and your life to date.  I would like you to split your writing into 5 parts (maybe write one part each day of this week).  The parts or chapters that I would like you to write about (in detail) are:

Personal Information (name, where you live, where you were born, parents, siblings etc)

Family (parents, siblings, grandparents, cousins, extended family)

Interests (things that you have enjoyed during throughout your life to date)

Friends

A memorable experience (something/somewhere that you have done in your life that you think that you will always remember)

Activity 1 – Find out what happened on the following dates.  Write a sentence about each date.  Put them in a timeline in chronological order.

Activity 2 – RESEARCH WHAT IT MEANS TO HAVE BEEN EVACUATED DURING THE WAR.

Make yourself an ‘evacuation label’ (it must contain your name, age and where you will be evacuated to.)

Activity 3 –  Ask if anyone in your family was evacuated during the war.  If so, speak to them about it and record their experiences and memories.  If not, write a list of questions that you would ask someone who was evacuated.  Hopefully, we will be able to ask these questions to an evacuee if we return to school.

Activity 4 –  Copy and paste the following link into your tool bar.  Listen to the WW2 noises, such as an air raid siren, bombings, spitfires.  Write a list of words to explain how they make you feel.

Activity 5 – Have a look online to find a wartime recipe. With an adult, try and follow a set of instructions to make one of the recipes.

If possible, please complete in J2 Easy and save to your file, this was, I will be able to see it and leave a comment.  If not, complete in your pink book.

Week beginning 18.05.2020

Language:

Keep a diary for the whole week.  Write down the things that you have done, how you have been feeling etc.  Look at the example below, remember your writing will need to be written in the past tense as you will have already completed the activities.  Try and use the skills that you worked on last week, such as capital letters and full stops, commas, there, they’re, their and ‘ed’ words for past tense verbs.

Topic: 

Activity 1:-  Plan then write a 2 minute presentation (in any form) to tell your classmates about the deadliest creature that you find most interesting.  Give facts, make them as exciting as you can!!

Activity 2:- Design a comic strip with your ‘favourite’ deadliest creature as the main character.  They could be the hero or maybe the villain.  There are examples of comic strips on Twinkl.

Activity 3:-  Draw a variety of mini beasts/creatures (fairly big) with speech bubbles coming from their mouths.  Write something that they may be saying if they could speak.  Make it funny perhaps, a joke maybe?

Activity 4:- Look at a range of Charles Darwin’s highly detailed drawings of insects/creatures.  Choose a deadly beast to draw with close attention to detail.  Add tone/texture using pencil, colour or even paint.

Language:-

Look at the following sheets of English skills, complete the sheets that you feel you need to work on.  These will have been your targets in class, such capital letters and full stops, use of commas, past tense words using ‘ed’ or the use of there, their, they’re.  Complete as many as you like, the more practise you have of all of them the better.  There is no need to print them out, write them in your home/school book, or put them on Hwb for me to see please.

Also, here is a comprehension for you to complete, read through the text and answer the questions as best you can BEFORE looking at the answers.  You only need to do ONE of the comprehensions!!  Choose the level that you think suits you best!!

Activity 1:-  On Hwb, create a ‘Branch’ of mini beasts.

Activity 2:-  Search the Internet for instructions on how to make a wormery. Compare the different versions, decide which way would be best, give reasons for your choice.

Activity 3: –  Find out facts about the worlds deadliest creatures; assassin bug, Asian giant hornets, safari ants, fire ants, teste flies, Anopheles mosquitoes, Indian red scorpions, black widow spiders.  Make a ‘Top Trump’ game from the information that you find, use a PowerPoint slide for each one.

Activity 4:-  Locate these deadly creatures on a World map.

Week beginning:- 4.5.2020

Hi everybody, hope you are keeping safe and well.  I’m finding it more and more difficult to stay at home but I know how important it is, so other than walk my dogs (as my daily exercise), I stay at home all day.  That’s why I enjoy receiving messages from you all, through Class Dojo, Teams and Hwb (the work I am seeing is great, please keep it up!).

This week we will continue with the topic of ‘Mini Beasts’, and I will give you some activities to complete on VE day.  Are any of you having a street party? (socially distancing of course)!  So Friday (May 8th 2020) is a bank holiday, so take time to have fun and spend time with your family.  Well, that’s enough from me, really hope that we will be back together soon.  Miss you all,  Mrs Jones.

Language –  Write a postcard.  Use the template above, draw a picture on the one side, complete some writing on the back and complete it by filling in the address.  Write it to me (at the school), tell me what you have been up to, tell me about the weather, how you are feeling etc.  Don’t worry about sending it, either complete it on hwb (this could be difficult) or put it in your home/school book, I will see it when we return to school.

Language – write a debate (argumentative text) on ‘Should animals/creatures be kept in zoos?’. Give advantages and disadvantages, then give your opinion in the final paragraph with reasons. (Remember to use phrases such as many people think, some people disagree, it could be argued that, on the other hand, it is sometimes said).

Maths –  Book 4  – p13-p15 adding pairs of numbers (use the hump method if it helps)

Book 5 – p13-p15 division finding remainders (you may find the bus stop method the best one for this)

Book 6 – p14-p16 doubling/halving  (multiplying/dividing by 2)

Blooms taxonomy –  orange ( analyse)  ideas:- write a review, make a mind map, create a Venn diagram or design a questionnaire.

Topic – Activity 1 – Write a set of instructions for making a mini beast hotel. Remember to use time connectives or imperative verbs to begin each numbered part. Make it as creative as you like. (I hope to build these when we get back to school!)

Activity 2 – Draw a detailed picture of your mini beast hotel. Label it in detail explaining why you have chosen to add this to your hotel.

Activity 3 – Design a poster advertising your mini beast hotel, either do this on paper or on hwb! Remember:- colour the background in first, make the writing big, bold and bright, only use up to 25 words! Make them count!

Language/Topic

Activity 1 – Research different types of butterfly, insects, mini beasts and other small
creatures. Draw/colour and label (in detail) what you find! Use books to help you.

Activity 2 – From your research, find a creature  that really interests you. Research facts about this creature (write these facts in note form, using bullet points), think about types of the creature/habitat/origin/appearance/diet/  predators etc.

Activity 3 – From your research and the notes that you have written, write a non-chronological report about the creature that you decided to research. Put your report on hwb, don’t forget to download images of your chosen creature too!

(use the success criteria in your home school book to help you to write the report!)

Activity 4 – During your daily exercise, or when you are out in your garden, complete a mini beast hunt. Make a tally chart of the number of creatures that you find!

Activity 5 – YOU WILL NEED TO COLLECT WOODLICE!!
In a box, or out in the garden, make small habitants for woodlice! Use grass, stone/gravel, damp wood, dry wood, mud/water to make the different habitats! Put some woodlice in the box (overnight), predict which habitant you think the woodlice will go to! Check in the morning to see if you were correct! Give reasons to why you think this happened! REMEMBER TO PUT THE WOODLICE BACK INTO THEIR NATURAL ENVIRONMENT WHEN YOU HAVE FINISHED!

Remember to make lines 2/4 rhyme.  Think of words that rhyme before you start.

Write an acrostic poem about EASTER.  Decorate it.  Be as descriptive as you can, use                 similes,  alliteration,   metaphors and  personification.

Remember to use the letters in the word EASTER to begin each line.

Write an account of the Easter story from the point of view of one of the people involved.

For example: Jesus, Mary, One of the disciples, Julius Caesar.

Remember to write in 1st person (you are writing as though you are that person!)
